Deflazit is prescribed for the treatment of various conditions, including:
Adults:
- Acute conditions: Up to 120 mg/day may be required initially. Maintenance doses generally range from 3-18 mg/day.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: 3-18 mg/day; use the lowest effective dose and increase if necessary.
- Asthma: Acute attacks may need 48-72 mg/day, gradually reduced after symptom control. Maintenance doses should be adjusted to the lowest effective dose.
- Other conditions: Dose should be tailored to clinical needs, aiming for the lowest effective dose. Typically, 6 mg of Deflazacort equals 5 mg of prednisone or prednisolone.
Children:
Limited data exists for children, but the same indications apply. The recommended dose ranges from 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day, with alternate-day administration possibly appropriate.
- Juvenile chronic arthritis: 0.25-1.0 mg/kg/day
- Nephrotic syndrome: 1.5 mg/kg/day, taper as needed
- Asthma: 0.25-1.0 mg/kg on alternate days
Withdrawal: For patients on more than 9 mg/day of corticosteroids for over three weeks, gradual dose reduction is necessary to prevent disease relapse.
